Best Chequing & Savings Accounts for Budgeting in Canada (2026)

Last updated:

By Jay Darji — Founder, Unified. Jay builds Unified, a Canadian budgeting app that connects all your bank accounts in one dashboard, and writes every guide on this blog based on building banking software for Canadians.

Almost any Canadian account can work with a budgeting app. But some make budgeting easier: no fees to track, sub-accounts for each goal, clean exports, and reliable connections. Here is how the main options compare.

Short answer

Any account at a major Canadian institution can link to a budgeting app: Plaid's coverage list includes the Big 5, National Bank, Desjardins, Tangerine, Simplii, EQ Bank and Wealthsimple. The best accounts for budgeting add no monthly fee, sub-accounts and easy exports:

  • Best overall: EQ Bank Personal Account ($0, up to 8 accounts).
  • Interest on everyday money: Wealthsimple Chequing (from 1.25%).
  • No-fee with ABM access: Tangerine.
  • Big bank: CIBC Smart Account, TD Unlimited or Scotiabank Preferred, if you keep $4,000 in it.
Verified October 5, 2026. Fees, rates and features come from each institution's own pages, linked in Sources. Rates change often; check before you open an account. We don't receive referral fees from any institution here. We make Unified, a budgeting app that connects to these accounts.

From each provider's own pages, verified October 5, 2026. EQ Bank rate effective October 2, 2026. Simplii's rate table did not load when we checked.

EQ Bank is the strongest all-rounder for a budget: no fee, unlimited transactions, free e-Transfers, and up to eight separate accounts you can name for each job, with automated transfers between them. Wealthsimple pays the most interest on everyday money if you qualify for a higher tier, also with up to eight accounts. Tangerine has the best export options (including Quicken's QFX format) and free access to Scotiabank ABMs.

A note on fintechs. Wealthsimple, KOHO and Neo aren't banks; deposit protection works through partner institutions and depends on the product. Our CDIC section explains the differences.

From each bank's product page, verified October 5, 2026. We left out National Bank because its product pages and fee-change notice showed different fees on that date.

Big banks cost more unless you keep a minimum balance, typically $4,000 for unlimited plans. That money is usually earning little or nothing, so compare the waiver with what the same $4,000 would earn in a savings account. What you get in return: branches, your mortgage and credit products in one place, and the richest built-in insights, such as RBC's NOMI tools. Our banking app comparison covers each bank's app.

Do These Accounts Work With Budgeting Apps?

Budgeting apps reach your bank through a data provider. Plaid, which Unified uses, publishes which data it supports at each institution:

Source: Plaid institution coverage, Canada, last updated September 18, 2026. Flinks lists the Big 5, Desjardins, EQ Bank, National Bank, Simplii, Tangerine and several credit unions among its major Canadian institutions.

Coverage at the data provider is necessary but not enough: each app chooses which institutions to switch on. Search for your bank in the app's connection screen during a free trial, or check Unified's supported banks. For how these connections work and what Canada's open banking framework will change, see Flinks vs Plaid.

Savings Accounts That Pair Well With a Budget

EQ Bank Notice Savings2.35% (10-day notice); 2.75% (30-day notice)None
Oaken Financial Savings2.80%None
Neo Savings2.75% (rate dated June 24, 2026)None
Tangerine Savings0.30%New clients: 4.50% for 5 months
Simplii High Interest SavingsSee Simplii4.60% for 5 months on up to $200,000; ends Oct 31, 2026

Rates change frequently. Promotional rates revert to the posted rate when they end.

For a budget, the posted rate matters more than the promotion: an emergency fund sits for years, not five months. Check that your budgeting app supports the institution, because a savings account your app can't see won't show up in your net worth or goals. Notice accounts like EQ Bank's pay more because you give 10 or 30 days' notice to withdraw, so keep at least part of your emergency fund somewhere instant. CDIC covers eligible deposits up to $100,000 per insured category at each member institution.

Putting the Accounts Together

A setup that works for many Canadians: keep your big bank for the mortgage and credit card, open a no-fee online account for everyday spending, and a high-interest savings account for the emergency fund. That is three institutions, which is exactly where a single view becomes essential. Our guide on how to budget and manage multiple bank accounts walks through giving each account a job, and the best budgeting apps in Canada compares the apps that pull it all together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which chequing accounts work with budgeting apps in Canada?

Compatibility depends on the institution and the app's data provider, not the type of chequing account. Plaid's Canadian coverage list (updated September 18, 2026) shows balances and transactions for RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC, National Bank, Desjardins, Tangerine, Simplii, EQ Bank and Wealthsimple, and balances and transactions (without instant account verification) for KOHO. Online banking must be set up on the account.

What is the best chequing account for budgeting in Canada?

For most people, a no-fee account with sub-accounts and easy exports: EQ Bank's Personal Account ($0, up to 8 separate accounts, CSV export) or Wealthsimple Chequing ($0, up to 8 accounts, interest from 1.25%). Tangerine is the best no-fee pick if you want branch-network ABMs through Scotiabank and Quicken (QFX) downloads. If you want a big bank, TD, CIBC and Scotiabank waive their unlimited-transaction plans at a $4,000 minimum balance.

Do I need to switch banks to use a budgeting app?

No. Most Canadian banks and credit unions work with budgeting apps that use aggregators like Plaid or Flinks. Switching only makes sense if your current account charges fees you don't want to pay, or your institution isn't supported by the app you want.

What is the best savings account to use alongside a budgeting app?

One that pays a solid everyday rate without promotions and is supported by your app. On October 5, 2026, EQ Bank's 30-Day Notice Savings paid 2.75% and Oaken Financial's savings account 2.80%; Tangerine and Simplii were offering 5-month promotional rates for new money. Promotional rates end, so judge an account by its posted rate.

Can I download my bank transactions to a spreadsheet?

Usually, yes, through online banking on the website rather than the mobile app. Tangerine offers QFX (Quicken), Microsoft Money and Excel CSV formats; EQ Bank offers CSV; Neo exports CSV from its website; Scotiabank offers QFX and QBO formats in its new online banking; Desjardins offers CSV statement downloads through AccèsD.
