Best Expense Tracker Apps in Canada (2026)

Last updated:

By Jay Darji — Founder, Unified. Jay builds Unified, a Canadian budgeting app that connects all your bank accounts in one dashboard, and writes every guide on this blog based on building banking software for Canadians.

Knowing where your money goes is the first step, and in Canada the hard part is getting the data in. Here is how automatic, manual and receipt-based trackers compare on Canadian banks, real cost in CAD, and the effort they take each week.

Quick picks

  • Spending across several Canadian banks, priced in CAD: Unified (our app).
  • Polished all-in-one, billed in USD: Monarch Money.
  • Multi-currency, Canadian-made: Lunch Money.
  • Manual tracking, free: Money Manager (4.8 on the Canadian App Store).
  • Self-employed with receipts: Wave or QuickBooks Lite.
Verified October 5, 2026. Prices come from each company's pricing page or the Canadian App Store; ratings are Canadian App Store averages on that date. We make Unified and say so where it comes up. Rocket Money and Copilot are left out because both are US-only.

Three Ways Expense Trackers Get Your Data

Every tracker is only as good as the data that reaches it. There are three ways that happens, and the trade-off is always effort against completeness:

MethodEffortWhat can go wrong
Bank sync (automatic)Connect once; transactions arrive on their ownA Canadian bank connection breaks or isn't supported
Manual entryType every purchase, usually right after payingYou stop entering things after a few busy weeks
Receipt scanningPhotograph receipts; the app reads themOnly covers purchases you have a receipt for

Bank sync is where Canadian users get burned. Most popular trackers are US-built and added Canada later. Monarch's help centre says some Canadian banks are difficult to connect or keep synced, YNAB calls Canadian institutions more challenging, and PocketSmith went as far as pausing its recommendation to Canadians in 2023. Test your own banks during any free trial before you pay.

Verified October 5, 2026. USD prices are charged in US dollars, so the Canadian cost moves with the exchange rate. Buying YNAB through the Canadian App Store costs CA$18.49/mo or CA$149/yr instead.

Unified: every Canadian account, one spending view

Disclosure: we make Unified. It connects chequing, savings, credit cards and lines of credit at TD, RBC, BMO, CIBC, Scotiabank, Tangerine, EQ Bank, Wealthsimple and more, read-only, then categorizes every transaction across all of them. You can search every bank at once, set rules like “Tim Hortons = Coffee”, add cash spending by hand, and see a subscription tracker that flags price increases. Transactions update on a daily sync, not instantly, and there is no receipt scanning.

Monarch Money: the most polished, in USD

Monarch is officially available in Canada and is strong on design and household sharing. It bills only in US dollars. Our Monarch Money in Canada guide covers which Canadian banks connect.

Lunch Money: multi-currency, from a Canadian company

Lunch Money is built by a Canadian company, supports CAD as a base currency and handles multiple currencies well, which suits people with US-dollar accounts. It is web-first and more of a power-user tool, with an API and CSV import.

YNAB and Simplifi: budgeting first

Both track spending, but they are built around a plan: YNAB's zero-based method and Simplifi's spending plan. Pick one of these if you want rules about where money should go, not just a record of where it went. See YNAB in Canada.

Manual Expense Trackers

Manual trackers skip bank connections entirely. Some people prefer this: entering each purchase makes you notice it, and no third party ever sees your bank data.

Money Manager (Realbyte)Free with ads; CA$2.99/mo or CA$24.99/yrFast, offline logging with double-entry accounts4.8

Goodbudget's bank sync covers US banks only, so Canadians use it manually.

The risk with manual tracking is simple: most people stop after a few weeks. If you go this route, log purchases the moment you pay and reconcile against your statements once a month. Our free Canadian budget template works as a spreadsheet tracker.

Can Your Banking App Track Spending?

Yes, for that bank's accounts. RBC's NOMI Insights and Budgets, CIBC Insights, BMO Insights and Scotiabank's Smart Money tools all categorize spending for free. Our comparison of Canadian banking apps covers each one.

The limit is that none of them can see another bank. If you pay rent from TD chequing and put groceries on an RBC Visa, the TD app shows rent and the RBC app shows groceries, and neither shows what you spent in total. Once you have accounts at two institutions, a separate tracker is the only way to get one number. If you are choosing accounts with tracking in mind, see the best chequing accounts for budgeting.

Self-Employed? Receipt and Business Trackers

If you need to claim expenses, you need receipts, mileage and sales tax, which personal trackers don't handle. These tools do:

ToolPriceReceiptsBank import in Canada
WaveStarter free; Pro CA$25/mo or CA$250/yrPaid add-onAutomatic imports on Pro only
QuickBooks LiteFrom about CA$20/moIncludedYes (2 bank connections)
ExpensifyFree Submit plan; paid plans in USDSmartScan includedPersonal card import

Wave moved automatic bank imports in Canada to Pro on January 29, 2024 (Wave support).

Keep business and personal spending on separate cards and accounts. It makes both trackers more accurate and tax time much simpler.

Free Expense Trackers in Canada

  • Your bank's app: free and automatic, one bank only.
  • Money Manager or a spreadsheet: free, manual.
  • Spendee and Wallet free tiers: limited wallets and features.
  • KOHO: spending insights on every plan, including the free one, but only for money in your KOHO account.
  • Wave Starter: free for business bookkeeping with manual statement uploads.

Automatic sync across several Canadian banks costs the app money for every connection, which is why free plans cap it. For a broader look, including what r/PersonalFinanceCanada recommends, see the best free finance apps in Canada.

How to Get Useful Numbers in the First Month

  1. Connect or list every account, including credit cards. Card spending is usually where the surprises are.
  2. Mark transfers between your own accounts so a credit card payment isn't counted as spending twice.
  3. Fix categories for your top 20 merchants and set rules so they stay fixed.
  4. Don't set budgets yet. Watch one full month first; budgets based on real numbers stick.
  5. Look for recurring charges you'd forgotten about. Subscriptions are the easiest money to recover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best expense tracker app in Canada?

If your spending is spread across more than one bank or credit card, pick an app that syncs Canadian accounts automatically: Unified (priced in CAD, built for Canadian banks), Monarch Money or Lunch Money. If you prefer typing in each purchase, Money Manager is the best-rated manual tracker on the Canadian App Store. If you are self-employed and need receipts for tax time, Wave or QuickBooks are better suited than a personal budgeting app.

Is there a free expense tracker that connects to Canadian banks?

Not one that syncs every Canadian bank automatically with no limits. Your bank's own app tracks spending for free, but only for that bank. Free tiers of Spendee and Wallet are limited, and Goodbudget's bank sync covers US banks only. Wave's free Starter plan needs manual statement uploads in Canada; automatic bank imports are on its paid Pro plan. Paid apps with trials, such as Unified (14 days) and Lunch Money (30 days), let you test sync first.

Which Canadian banking app is best for tracking spending?

RBC has the most complete free tools in its own app (NOMI Insights, Budgets and Forecast). CIBC, BMO and Scotiabank also categorize spending. All of them only see accounts at that bank, so if your credit card is at a different bank from your chequing account, you need a separate tracker to see total spending.

What's the difference between an expense tracker and a budgeting app?

An expense tracker records where money went and groups it into categories. A budgeting app adds limits for where money should go and tells you when you are close to them. Most automatic trackers, Unified included, do both; manual trackers like Money Manager lean toward recording.

Can I scan receipts with an expense tracker in Canada?

Personal budgeting apps generally don't read receipts. For receipt scanning, use a business tool: Expensify's free Submit plan includes SmartScan, Wave sells receipt scanning as an add-on, and QuickBooks Lite in Canada includes receipt capture. YNAB and Money Manager let you attach a photo but don't read it.

Does Rocket Money work in Canada?

No. Rocket Money's help centre says it is only available to users in the United States with US-based banks. Copilot Money is also US-only. See our Rocket Money in Canada guide for Canadian alternatives.
