Short answer: The Plaid alternatives that document Canadian bank coverage are Flinks, MX, Inverite, and Yodlee. Salt Edge lists just two Canadian connections, and Mastercard Open Banking (Finicity) does not list Canada at all. Plaid itself has covered the Big Five and Tangerine since 2018. None of them, Plaid included, publish a Canada-only institution count.

Two Kinds of People Search This
"Plaid alternatives Canada" gets typed by two very different people. The first is a consumer who just connected a bank to a budgeting app, saw a Plaid logo, and wants to know what that company is, whether it is safe, and whether there is a better way. The second is a developer or founder who needs to pull Canadian bank data into a product and is comparing providers. Both get an answer here. If you are the first person, the consumer section is written for you and you can skim the table. If you are the second, the table and the builder checklist are the meat.
One term to know: a data aggregator (or "bank connection provider") is the company that sits between your bank and an app, handles the login, and passes back balances and transactions. Apps rarely build this themselves. Plaid is the best-known aggregator in North America, which is why its name has become shorthand for the category, the way "Interac" means e-transfer.
What Plaid Does in Canada
Plaid launched in Canada on May 22, 2018, naming Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, TD Canada Trust, Bank of Montreal, CIBC, and Tangerine as launch institutions, alongside cross-border American Express. Wealthsimple and Wave were among its beta customers.
What you can do with Plaid in Canada today is documented on its products-by-country help page. As of August 23, 2026, the Canadian list includes Auth (account and routing details), Balance, Identity, Transactions, Investments, Assets, Income, Identity Verification, and Liabilities with limited coverage. Two things on the US list are not on the Canadian one: Transfer (Plaid's money-movement product) and Signal. For consumers that is a useful detail: a Canadian app using Plaid is working with data products, not payment rails.
How Many Canadian Banks Does Plaid Cover?
Plaid does not publish a Canada-only number. Its documentation says it "supports over 10,000 institutions across the United States and Canada" and its global page cites 12,000+ institutions across 20 countries. The practical way to check a specific credit union or online bank is to open the bank search inside an app that uses Plaid. Unified's supported banks page is one such list.
Plaid Alternatives in Canada: The Comparison Table
Every cell below comes from the provider's own site. Note how often the honest entry is "no Canada-only count published": the industry quotes North American totals, and the only provider that states a Canadian institution count is Inverite.
| Provider | Focus | Canadian coverage (as published) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plaid | General-purpose data + payments API; broadest product set | Canada supported since May 2018; Auth, Balance, Identity, Transactions, Investments, Assets, Income in Canada. No Canada-only count published (10,000+ US + Canada combined). | Plaid help centre |
| Flinks | Canada-first aggregation, lending data, A2A payments | Montreal-based; 80% owned by National Bank of Canada (2021). 15,000+ North American institutions, 1,500+ direct bank APIs, 95%+ connection rate. No Canada-only count published. | flinks.com |
| MX | Aggregation + data enhancement, mainly for banks and credit unions | Utah-based. Claims "the most comprehensive coverage for demand deposit accounts across U.S. and Canada" and 75%+ direct connections. No Canada-only count published. | mx.com |
| Inverite | Instant bank verification and income data for lenders | Canadian. "Support for over 240 Canadian Financial Institutions." Built for underwriting rather than consumer budgeting apps. | inverite.com |
| Yodlee | Long-running global aggregator, wealth and PFM data | 19,000+ data sources globally; FastLink lists Canada as a supported region with Canadian English and French. No Canada-only count published. | Yodlee developer docs |
| Salt Edge | Open banking compliance and aggregation, strongest in Europe | 5,000+ institutions in 50+ countries globally, but its Canada coverage page lists 2 connections (American Express, RBC). | Salt Edge Canada page |
| Mastercard Open Banking (Finicity) | US open banking, account verification, lending | Lists the U.S., Australia, Brazil, and Europe as its markets. Canada is not listed. (Finicity was acquired by Mastercard, not Fiserv.) | mastercard.com |

Flinks
Flinks is the Canada-first option. It launched in Montreal in April 2017, and in August 2021 National Bank of Canada took an 80% stake for $103 million. Its site advertises 15,000+ North American institutions, 1,500+ direct bank API connections, and a 95%+ data connection rate, plus an "Outbound" product that helps banks expose open-banking APIs. Canadian ownership and a Canadian head office are real considerations for businesses that care about data residency.
MX
MX, based in Utah, sells mostly to banks and credit unions and is one of YNAB's two import providers (see our YNAB in Canada guide). Its account aggregation page claims "the most comprehensive coverage for demand deposit accounts across U.S. and Canada" with 75%+ direct connections, but gives no institution count.
Inverite
Inverite is Canadian and built for lenders: instant bank verification and income data for underwriting. It is the one provider that states a Canadian figure: "support for over 240 Canadian Financial Institutions". It is not aimed at consumer budgeting apps.
Yodlee
Yodlee is the oldest name in aggregation and claims 19,000+ data sources and 91%+ direct connections globally. Its FastLink connection widget lists Canada as a supported region with Canadian English and French localization, but Yodlee publishes no Canadian institution count.
Salt Edge
Salt Edge is strong in Europe, with 5,000+ institutions across 50+ countries. Its Canada coverage page listed exactly two connections on August 23, 2026: American Express and Royal Bank of Canada. For a Canadian consumer product, that is not enough.
Mastercard Open Banking (Finicity)
Finicity was acquired by Mastercard and now operates as Mastercard Open Banking. Its site claims 95% of U.S. deposit accounts and, in its FAQ, lists the U.S., Australia, Brazil, and Europe as its markets. Canada does not appear. (Fiserv, sometimes confused with Finicity, is a different company.)
What This Means If You Just Want to Connect a Bank
If you are a consumer, you do not pick the aggregator; the app does. What you can evaluate is how the connection behaves:
- Read-only is the norm for budgeting apps. A data connection lets the app see balances and transactions. It does not let the app move money, and in Plaid's case the money-movement product is not even offered in Canada. Our banking app security guide walks through the questions to ask.
- Where you type your password matters. Some Canadian banks offer OAuth, where you log in on the bank's own page and the aggregator receives a token. Others still rely on credential-based connections, where the aggregator handles your login on your behalf. Either way, the app itself (Unified included) should never see or store your banking password. Be wary of any app that asks you to type bank credentials directly into its own form.
- You can revoke access. Disconnect inside the app, and for OAuth banks, from your bank's connected-apps settings too.
- The rules are changing. Canada's consumer-driven banking framework, now overseen by the Bank of Canada, is meant to replace credential sharing with regulated, bank-provided APIs. Aggregators are the bridge until then. Our open banking in Canada explainer covers the timeline without repeating it here.
If what you actually want is to see TD, RBC, BMO, CIBC, and Scotiabank in one place, the aggregator is an implementation detail; the guide to seeing all your bank accounts in one place is the practical version of this page.
Choosing an Aggregator If You Are Building Something
Having integrated one of these for a Canadian consumer product, here is the short checklist we would hand a founder:
- Test against your users' actual banks. Published totals are North American. Make a list of the 20 institutions your first users bank with, including the credit unions, and run each provider's sandbox or trial against it. Connection success rate on that list matters more than any marketing number.
- Ask what share of those connections is OAuth or direct API versus credential-based, and how the provider handles a bank changing its login flow. This is what determines how often your users will see "please reconnect."
- Match the product set to your use case. Budgeting apps need transactions and balances with good categorization. Lenders need verification and income. Payment products need Auth and, eventually, money movement, which is where Canadian coverage is thinnest across the board.
- Check data residency and ownership if your customers or regulators care. Flinks and Inverite are Canadian-owned; Plaid, MX, Yodlee, and Mastercard are not.
- Ask about the open banking roadmap. Every provider says it will be accredited under Canada's framework. Ask what that means for your contract and migration when bank-provided APIs arrive.
- Price on connected accounts, not API calls. None of these providers publish Canadian pricing; you will negotiate it. Model the cost at your expected accounts per user, because that multiplier is what surprises people.
Why Unified Uses Plaid
Full transparency: Unified connects to Canadian banks through Plaid. We chose it because it covered the Big Five, Tangerine, Simplii, EQ Bank, Wealthsimple, Questrade, and the major credit unions our early users asked for; because it is SOC 2 Type II certified; and because its Canadian product set is data-only, which fits an app whose whole security model is read-only access. Your bank credentials go to your bank or to Plaid, never to us. You can read the details on our security page and check your institutions on the supported banks page. We revisit this choice as the open banking framework matures, and if we ever switch or add a provider, this page will say so.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best Plaid alternatives in Canada?
The aggregators that publicly document Canadian coverage are Flinks (Montreal-based, majority-owned by National Bank, 15,000+ North American institutions), MX (Utah-based, describes itself as the market leader for API connections to US and Canadian demand deposit accounts), Inverite (Canadian, 240+ Canadian institutions, lender-focused), and Yodlee (19,000+ data sources globally, Canada supported as a region). Salt Edge lists only two Canadian connections, and Mastercard Open Banking (formerly Finicity) does not list Canada among its markets. Which is best depends on the banks your users have and the product you are building.
Does Plaid work in Canada?
Yes. Plaid launched Canadian coverage in May 2018 with RBC, Scotiabank, TD, BMO, CIBC, and Tangerine, and its help centre lists Auth, Balance, Identity, Transactions, Investments, Assets, Income, Identity Verification, and limited Liabilities as products supported in Canada. Plaid does not publish a Canada-only institution count; it states that it supports over 10,000 institutions across the United States and Canada combined.
Is Plaid safe to use with Canadian banks?
Plaid is SOC 2 Type II certified and, for consumer apps like Unified, the connection is read-only: the app can see balances and transactions but cannot move money. Plaid's Transfer product is not listed for Canada at all. The app you connect through still matters; check its privacy policy and revoke connections you no longer use. Our banking app security guide covers what to look for.
Which Canadian banks does Plaid support?
Plaid's Canadian launch announcement named RBC, Scotiabank, TD Canada Trust, BMO, CIBC, Tangerine, and cross-border American Express. Plaid does not publish a full public list of Canadian institutions; the reliable way to check is the bank search inside an app that uses Plaid. Unified's supported banks page lists the institutions Unified connects to.
Is Flinks better than Plaid in Canada?
Neither is universally better. Flinks is Canadian-owned and Canada-first, which some Canadian businesses prefer, and it advertises a 95%+ data connection rate. Plaid has a larger global footprint and a broader product set. Both publish North American coverage rather than Canada-only numbers, so the practical test for any builder is to run both against a list of the institutions your actual users bank with.
Does Unified use Plaid?
Yes. Unified connects to Canadian banks through Plaid, with read-only access, and never sees or stores your banking password. We chose Plaid for its Canadian bank coverage, its security certifications, and its OAuth-based connections where banks offer them. We review that choice as Canada's open banking framework rolls out.
