Best Quicken Alternatives in Canada (2026)

Last updated:

By Jay Darji — Founder, Unified. Jay builds Unified, a Canadian budgeting app that connects all your bank accounts in one dashboard, and writes every guide on this blog based on building banking software for Canadians.

Quicken is still sold in Canada, so the first question is whether you need to leave at all. If you do, the right replacement depends on what you actually used Quicken for: a detailed ledger, investment records, or simply seeing your accounts.

Short answer

Quicken Classic is still available in Canada (Starter CA$4.49/mo, Deluxe CA$6.99/mo, Home & Business CA$9.99/mo, billed annually). The best alternatives:

  • Closest desktop replacement: Moneydance.
  • Free: GnuCash.
  • Mac only: Banktivity.
  • Low-upkeep app with Canadian bank sync, in CAD: Unified (our app).
  • Budgeting method: YNAB.
Verified October 5, 2026. Quicken plans and prices come from Quicken's Canadian site; every alternative links to its own pricing or product page in Sources. We make Unified and say so where it comes up.

Quicken Home & BusinessCA$9.99/mo, billed annuallyWindows only

From Quicken Canada's comparison page, October 5, 2026. Plans auto-renew after 12 months and include the Quicken mobile and web companion.

  • No Premier tier in Canada. Premier is a US plan; Canadian guides that mention it are out of date.
  • Mac support is real but narrower: the Canadian Mac page lists Starter and Deluxe only. Quicken released its first Canadian Mac edition in December 2017.
  • Bank downloads: Quicken cites 275+ participating Canadian institutions, a figure it dates to September 2022.
  • No discontinuation announced. We found no notice that the Canadian edition is ending.

Why Canadians Look for Alternatives

  • Subscriptions. Quicken moved from one-time purchases to annual plans; people who bought a version years ago don't want to rent it.
  • Connection reliability. Downloads from some Canadian institutions use Web Connect files you fetch yourself rather than automatic updates.
  • Mac and phone use. Home & Business is Windows-only, and the mobile app is a companion, not the main product.
  • Upkeep. A full ledger needs regular reconciliation, which many people no longer want to do.

If none of these bother you, staying on Quicken is a reasonable choice: it is still the most complete Canadian desktop package.

Desktop Alternatives

Moneydance: the closest match

Moneydance works the way Quicken users expect: register-style accounts, categories, reconciliation, budgets and investments. It runs on Mac, Windows and Linux, supports multiple currencies, and imports QIF, QFX and OFX. You buy a licence once; the optional Moneydance+ service (US$4/mo or US$40/yr as an add-on) syncs US and Canadian banks through Plaid.

GnuCash: free, if you can live with accounting terms

GnuCash is free, open source and genuinely powerful: double-entry books, multiple currencies, business features and QIF/OFX import. The interface assumes you know debits from credits, and there is no automatic bank sync.

Banktivity: for Mac households

Banktivity runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad, priced US$6.99 to US$10.99 a month billed annually. It imports Quicken data, but we couldn't confirm its automatic sync covers Canadian banks, so plan on file imports.

App Alternatives That Sync Canadian Banks

If Quicken was mostly a window onto your accounts, an app will save you hours a month. These connect to Canadian institutions automatically:

  • Unified (disclosure: ours): built for Canadian banks and priced in CAD. Chequing, savings, credit cards, lines of credit, TFSAs and RRSPs in one dashboard, with budgets, subscriptions, a cash flow calendar and net worth. Web and iOS; CSV export any time. No investment-lot tracking or business books.
  • Monarch Money: polished and available in Canada, billed in USD. See Monarch Money in Canada.
  • YNAB: the best budgeting method, billed in USD, with sync for select Canadian banks. See YNAB in Canada.
  • Lunch Money: from a Canadian company, strong multi-currency support, priced in CAD, USD or EUR.
  • Quicken Simplifi: Quicken's own app, launched in Canada in August 2024 and listed at CA$12.99/mo or CA$99.99/yr on the Canadian App Store. Quicken's Canadian comparison page still called it US-only when we checked, so confirm your banks connect.

How to Move Your Quicken Data

  1. Back up first. Save a full Quicken backup file somewhere safe and keep your licence active until the new setup is working.
  2. Export. Quicken for Windows exports QIF; Quicken for Mac exports QMTF, which Banktivity says can be renamed to .QIF. Export reports to CSV for anything you want in a spreadsheet.
  3. Decide how much history to bring. Desktop programs can import years of transactions. For an app, start fresh from today and keep the Quicken export as your archive; apps fetch recent history from your bank when you connect.
  4. Reconcile opening balances. Make sure each account's starting balance in the new tool matches your bank statement on the switch date.
  5. Run both for a month. Compare month-end balances before you cancel Quicken.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Quicken still available in Canada?

Yes. As of October 2026 Quicken sells Quicken Classic to Canadians in three plans, priced in CAD and billed annually: Starter (CA$4.49/mo), Deluxe (CA$6.99/mo) and Home & Business (CA$9.99/mo, Windows only). The Mac version offers Starter and Deluxe. We found no announcement that the Canadian edition is being discontinued.

What is the best free alternative to Quicken in Canada?

GnuCash. It is free, open-source double-entry accounting software for Windows, Mac and Linux that imports QIF and OFX files, so you can bring Quicken data across. It doesn't sync with banks automatically. Actual Budget is a free, open-source option if you mainly used Quicken for budgeting.

What is the closest Quicken alternative?

Moneydance. Like Quicken it is a desktop ledger with accounts, categories, reconciliation and investment tracking; it runs on Mac, Windows and Linux; and it imports QIF, QFX and OFX files. Its optional Moneydance+ service adds automatic sync for US and Canadian banks through Plaid.

Is Quicken Simplifi available in Canada?

Quicken launched Simplifi in the Canadian App Store and Google Play on August 27, 2024, connecting to BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC, RBC and TD, and the Canadian App Store lists it at CA$12.99 a month or CA$99.99 a year. Quicken's Canadian comparison page still described Simplifi as US-only when we checked, so confirm your banks during sign-up.

How do I export my data from Quicken?

Quicken for Windows can export to QIF, which most alternatives import, and you can export reports to CSV. Quicken for Mac exports a QMTF file; Banktivity's help centre says you can rename it to .QIF to import it. Keep a full Quicken backup file as well, in case you need to go back.

Do I need desktop software, or will an app do?

If you used Quicken for detailed records (reconciling every account, investment lots, rental property or small-business reports), stay with desktop software such as Quicken, Moneydance or GnuCash. If you mainly used it to see balances and track spending, an app that syncs automatically will do the same job with far less upkeep.
