Monarch Money in Canada: Does It Work, What It Costs, and What to Watch For

Last updated:

By Jay Darji — Founder, Unified. Jay builds Unified, a Canadian budgeting app that connects all your bank accounts in one dashboard, and writes every guide on this blog based on building banking software for Canadians.

Monarch Money is officially available to Canadians. Before you start the trial, here is what it costs in Canadian dollars, how it handles CAD, which banks connect, and where it falls short for Canadian accounts.

Short answer

Yes, Monarch Money works in Canada. It is officially available here and connects to Canadian banks through Plaid, Finicity and MX. Three things to know first:

  • It bills in US dollars: $99.99 USD/year (about $137.59 CAD) or $14.99 USD/month.
  • It does not convert currencies. CAD and USD balances are added together one-to-one.
  • It doesn't support TSX-listed securities for holdings and performance.
Verified October 5, 2026 against Monarch's Canada page, pricing page and help centre (sources at the end). Disclosure: we make Unified, one of the alternatives covered here. Our separate Monarch Money vs Unified page compares the two apps directly.

Is Monarch Money Available in Canada?

Yes. Monarch's Canada page announces that Monarch is "now available in Canada", and its help centre FAQ says the app is available only in the US and Canada. Monarch opened to Canadians in late 2023, shortly after Intuit announced Mint was shutting down. At the time, its CEO acknowledged limited Canadian bank connectivity, no multi-currency support and USD-only billing. Bank connectivity has been the focus since. The currency and billing points still apply, as covered below.

The app is in the Canadian App Store and on Google Play, and works on the web.

Monarch Money Pricing in Canadian Dollars

PlanPrice (USD)≈ CADWhat's included
Core, monthly$14.99/mo$20.63/moFull budgeting, net worth, investments, partner access
Core, annual$99.99/yr ($8.33/mo)$137.59/yrSame as monthly
Plus, annual$199.99/yr$275.19/yrAdds forecasting, business tracking, advanced investment analysis

USD prices from monarch.com/pricing. CAD estimates use the Bank of Canada rate of 1.376 (August 21, 2026), before sales tax and card foreign transaction fees.

The Canada page is explicit: "All prices are billed in USD." Most Canadian credit cards add a foreign transaction fee of around 2.5% on USD charges, so your actual cost depends on your card and the exchange rate on renewal day. There is a 7-day free trial (payment method required) and a money-back guarantee. Monarch also advertises a WELCOME code for 30% off the first year of annual Core when you subscribe directly, not through Apple or Google.

For comparison, Unified costs $6.99 CAD/month or $69 CAD/year, billed in Canadian dollars, after a 14-day free trial. YNAB is $14.99 USD/month or $109 USD/year; see our YNAB in Canada guide.

CAD Support and Currency Handling

This is the most important thing to understand before you sign up. Monarch's International Accounts and Currency help article says Monarch "does not differentiate between currencies" and "does not perform any currency conversion." Every amount shows with a plain $ sign, you cannot choose a display currency, and Monarch says it has no plans to expand currency support soon.

Your situationHow Monarch handles it
All accounts in CADWorks. Every figure is in CAD, just labelled $
Mix of CAD and USD accountsAdded together 1:1. $10,000 CAD + $10,000 USD shows as $20,000
US-listed stocks in a Canadian brokeragePrices shown in USD, mixed with CAD balances
TSX-listed stocks and ETFsNot supported for holdings/performance

If you have a US dollar account, a USD savings account at a Canadian bank, or US stocks, expect your net worth and spending totals to be off by the exchange rate on those balances.

Canadian Bank Connections

Monarch uses three data providers: Plaid, Finicity and MX, and lets you switch provider per institution if one is not working. The same article acknowledges that "some banks in Canada" are difficult to connect to or keep synced. Monarch publishes a connection status page, but no list of supported Canadian institutions. Its Canada page recommends using the trial to "confirm your institutions connect reliably."

Practical advice: during the 7-day trial, connect every account you care about (chequing, credit cards, TFSA, RRSP, mortgage) and check that they are still syncing a few days later. For investment accounts, Monarch notes that some brokerages connected through MX don't pass holdings, so you may need to enter them manually. If you want to know how these providers differ, see Flinks vs Plaid.

On features alone, Monarch is one of the most polished all-in-one money apps available. Its budgets are flexible, the net worth view is good, and partner sharing is included rather than an add-on. The gaps for Canadians are about the data underneath: currency, Canadian securities and connection reliability.

Where Unified fits: Unified is built in Canada and priced in CAD. It connects Canadian banks, credit cards and investment accounts through Plaid, and focuses on everyday money: budgets (monthly or by paycheque), spending insights, subscription detection and net worth. It does not do holding-level investment analytics. If that is what you need, Monarch (for US securities) or Wealthica (for Canadian ones) goes deeper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Monarch Money work in Canada?

Yes. Monarch says it is available in Canada and its help centre says it is available only in the US and Canada. You can connect Canadian banks through its data providers (Plaid, Finicity and MX), but Monarch itself says some Canadian banks are difficult to connect or keep synced, and it recommends using the 7-day trial to confirm your institutions work.

How much does Monarch Money cost in Canada?

Monarch bills in US dollars: $14.99 USD per month or $99.99 USD per year for Core, and $199.99 USD per year for Plus. At the Bank of Canada rate of 1.376 (August 21, 2026), that is about $20.63 CAD per month or $137.59 CAD per year for Core, before any foreign transaction fee your card charges.

Does Monarch Money support Canadian dollars?

Not really. Monarch's help centre says it does not differentiate between currencies and does not perform any currency conversion, and that it charges only in USD. A CAD account and a USD account are both shown with a plain $ and added together one-to-one. If all your accounts are in CAD, the numbers are fine; if you mix CAD and USD, totals and net worth will be off.

Can Monarch Money track TSX stocks?

According to Monarch's investments help article, it does not support securities listed on Canadian exchanges and displays stocks in USD. Balances from connected Canadian brokerage accounts can still appear, but holding-level prices and performance for TSX-listed securities are not supported.

Is Monarch Money safe for Canadians?

Monarch states it is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, encrypts data at rest and in transit, never stores bank credentials, cannot move money, and does not sell data. One point for Canadians: Monarch says your data is stored in US-based AWS data centres.

What is the best Monarch Money alternative in Canada?

It depends on what you need. Unified is Canadian-built and priced in CAD ($6.99 per month or $69 per year after a 14-day trial) for budgeting, spending and net worth across Canadian banks. YNAB suits strict zero-based budgeters but also bills in USD. Wealthica suits investors who want detailed portfolio reports from Canadian brokerages. PocketSmith suits long-range cash-flow forecasting.

Is Monarch Money free?

No. Monarch has no free plan. It offers a 7-day free trial (a payment method is required) and a money-back guarantee, then charges $14.99 USD per month or $99.99 USD per year.
